Title General Info

Sofia Municipality is an administrative unit with a status of a region and is divided into 24 districts, administered by local mayors. That is why, in terms of territorial scope, Sofia region is identical with Sofia Municipality. Besides the capital city, the 24 districts of Sofia encompass three other towns and 34 villages with a total population of around 1,291,591 people (according to the 2011 census).

Sofia region is located in western Bulgaria, at the foot of mount Vitosha and is situated approximately at the centre of the Balkan Peninsula. This geographical location inarguably is of strategic importance to the city and its surroundings, because the area represents a cross point of three Pan-European transport corridors.

The local authority is represented by the Sofia Municipal Council, a body of local self-government, and by the city Mayor, who performs executive functions supported by the municipal administration. The competencies of the Sofia Municipal Council cover the adoption and the implementation of strategies, programmes and plans on local issues concerning the sustainable development of the city. The Municipal Administration, on the other hand, is divided into nine sectors with different spheres of activities, among which falls “Education and culture”.

Title The City

The city of Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria and the biggest political, administrative, and business centre in the country. With its current population amounting to more than 1,2 mln. inhabitants, Sofia contributes to the creation of more than 34% of Bulgarian GDP.

Due to the abundance of beautiful green areas, with nearly 10,000 acres of park territory, Sofia enjoys a reputation as a “green” city. In addition, over Sofia, with an area of 300 km2, rises one of the most popular Bulgarian mountains – Vitosha, which offers excellent tourist centers, maintained ski tracks and facilities that can be used even at night.

The capital is considered a young and intelligent city with higher educational establishments in almost all spheres of education and science. 20 of all 44 universities in Bulgaria are located in the city with over 40,000 students. The main science institute - Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, is also located in Sofia.

At the same time, Sofia is one of the oldest European cities, founded 7 thousand years ago. Namely for this reason, the capital of Bulgaria is a place with rich historical heritage. The cultural routes in Sofia are a charming combination of ancient history and modernity.

The city of Sofia especially takes pride in its rich cultural life. The cultural calendar of the city offers a wide range of seasoned international festivals and events such as the Sofia Film Fest, Sofia Music Weeks, Sofia Design Week, Sofia Dance Week, Little Sfumato season, Water Tower Art Festival and many others. Namely for that reason, Sofia is the most promising Bulgarian contestants for the title “European Capital of Culture” for 2019.
